This past week I was in Atlantic City for the $2K deep stack tournament and one of my favorite tournaments to play, The Junkies Poker Open. For those of you who don't know the Junkies, they are four guys who grew up together and now have the most popular morning radio show in the DC area. Their job is hanging out with each other and talking sports, girls, entertainment, poker, whatever. Not a bad gig, huh? This past week, they held their 5th Junkies Poker Open at the Borgata in AC and it was an awesome time as usual.
Wednesday night before the tournament, they had their usual meet and greet party at one of the bars at Borgata. I got to hang out with all the boys a bit there and got to meet some of the fans and some of the guys that I have heard the Junks talk about over the years that they grew up with or they are pretty tight with now.
After the party, I went and played some blackjack with Lurch (Jason Bishop) and then played some cash games with my friends Karen and Kelly. I had a great time at both and it was especially cool hanging out with Lurch a bit and getting to know him a little better. He seems like a solid dude. I look forward to more blackjack and/or flops with him in the future. I also hung out with EB and Cakes a bit at the bar that night, but didn't get to see some flops with them at all. Hopefully in the near future though.
Acumen Poker was well represented in the tournament. Kelly Armentrout, Karen Perez, Jeri Crews, Troy Parkins, Tom Jennings and myself were all sporting the patches so that "Team Acumen" would be known and of course feared at every table :) My new friends Put and Phil also asked to wear patches, so that was really cool that some others wanted to sport my gear.
Tom was the man of the day, navigating the minefield of 535 players and finishing in an impressive 4th place for about $9K. Way to go Tom and thanks so much for representing Acumen Poker! I talked with Tom quite a bit about some of the hands he played along the way and believe me when I tell you, he played some awesome poker. He's got a knack for getting through some of the fast-structure tournaments and I am confident even bigger results are coming soon.
I met a lot of great folks that were up for the event and had quite a bit of interest in training. I hope to get a group training class organized soon and expect to be taking on a few new individual students as well. Other than this most recent score by Tom, I have had a few others folks that I have worked with take down some nice wins recently. I'll post another blog about all of those and I think I am going to spend some time updating my Web site in the next week. It's about time for a student success page. I won't be doing too much of that today though. My buddy, Pat, is coming to town and we are going to go watch the Skins beat up on the Cowboys tonight!
Well, that's it for this blog and the first one in the new home of the Acumen Poker Blog. I hope everyone is making good decisions at the tables and most importantly that you Decide to Win!
